i was thinking, perhaps it was Michael W. Smith, off the album I 2 EYE, but i am not sure its John 1 on that album, i just remember a scary song on there, with low speaking and then going into a 80s pop hit, are you certain it was John 1?
It might have been a combo of verses. I just remember the voice talking about light and darkness and ending with that quote about darkness never mastering it. No, this pre-dates MWS a bit. And more obscure. This was almost a 70's style harder rock and it was instrumental except for the opening. I remember taping a snatch of the tune off a music program in the Chicago area on WYCA with Chris Stevens hosting. Had to be 1980-81 I think.
Wow, I remember WYCA. I would listen to it all the time. I don't remember Chris Stevens ever being on there, but he could have. I remember when he was the DJ at WCFL, when it changed to a Christian format (I hated the day when I tuned in to hear Jonathan Brandmeier's voice and the call letters becoming WLUP, the Loop AM).
The fact is that I had a dilemma like yours, where I had a song taped off of WYCA and, for about the same length of time (25 years), didn't know who sang it it or the name of the song. Recently, Johnny (from this blog) helped me find out that the singer was Lewis McVay and that the song was called "Someday." Yet, what did help was that I have a faded copy that I taped from WYCA back in the day. Do you have even a small piece of the song that can be posted? If we can hear it, maybe someone would recognize it.

WCFL was the station ( I actually still have a station bumper sticker on one of my old guitar cases). As a young teen listing late at night trying to capture some of this stuff on cassette, it didn't really matter! Thanks Mark for the title.
Happy to help. Actually I remember now that it was the CannyShark's podcast which helped solve that very mystery for me, as I had only heard the tune once back in '82 on a mixtape borrowed from a high school friend who dubbed it (coincidentally enough) from Kris Stevens' (aka Darrell Encarlo) show on WYCA, and my friend couldn't remember the artist or title either! Even though I only listened to it a couple times through, the intro and the riff stuck with me all these years.
